ُُُSeminar in English Language Teaching

Teaching in general and English language teaching, in particular, is a multifaceted and complicated area of inquiry. The complication comes from several adjacent areas that might profoundly impact this discipline. Despite a large number of journals publishing research articles and textbooks discussing English language teaching and learning intricacies, we are still faced with many problems in dire need of solutions. This diversity of problems indicates the situated nature of teaching and learning, and that we cannot prescribe general solutions such as one size fits all! That is, applied linguists, curriculum planners, and English language teachers are constantly dealing with novel context-bound glitches and they have to find strategies that fit in with their local teaching/learning context. This brief introduction is expected to illustrate the objectives of the course. The course expects students to study recently published research articles of their interests in reputable journals with a critical mind and discuss them in the classroom. They are then invited to negotiate the content of each article in relation to the immediate context that they are experiencing/have experienced. As a second major goal of the course, the readings of the papers are assumed to help students to develop their tentative thesis project topics. The students are required to discuss their topics with their supervisors and a tentative proposal should be delivered to the instructor by the end of the semester. The classroom discussions together with the proposal will comprise the final semester score.
